Playing music has benefits for every aspect of life: creativity, technique, focus, and fun are encouraged as we learn how to become better musicians. </p> <p> I am currently accepting students in the Portland area, offering private lessons for all ages and abilities in viola, violin, and beginning piano. Please <a href="mailto:heathermattie@gmail.com" >email me</a> to set up a lesson, I offer a complimentary half hour lesson to all new students. </p> <p>My expectation of the student is that they are enthusiastic about their lessons and willing to put in the demanding work that is necessary to fine tune their artistry. Together we will decide on pieces and goals according to your technical abilities and musical interests. For younger students, parents will have a role in the success of their child s music education. Performing opportunities will be available since it is my philosophy that music is a gift that should be shared. </p> <p><b> Rates and Location</b> </p> <p>$30/half hour, $40/45min, $50/hour</p> <p> All lessons will take place in my studio located at 833 SE Main St. Portland, Oregon. </p> </p> <p><b>Reviews</b> </p> <p>"Mattie is the best viola teacher in the world" says my six year old son. Mattie does a great job of finding the right balance with him. She uses humor but also knows when to reign his natural goofy exuberance in to keep the lesson focused and productive. She is flexible in using a variety of techniques to teach him musical concepts, changing tactics to keep her teaching effective. After 2 years of lessons with Mattie, he has his own important relationship with Mattie that keeps him practicing. - Lydia</p> <p>Mattie has been a terrific violin teacher for me as an adult beginner. I had been taking lessons for a while but not making much progress, and I was growing increasingly frustrated. I was impressed with how quickly I advanced when I switched to Mattie, and members of my family soon remarked on the difference in my playing (I'm sure they were greatly relieved!). She has a teaching style that is both intuitive and innovative; she is very good at spotting the true nature of underlying problems, and coming up with useful suggestions and exercises for addressing them. I like her holistic approach to teaching, incorporating movement and breathing into playing the instrument, and being aware of style and feeling. Mattie is incredibly patient and supportive, and I particularly appreciate her willingness to be flexible in scheduling lessons to work around my job and family schedules. Working with Mattie has gotten me through that painful beginning period of playing the violin to the point I'm at now, where I can't find enough time to play as much as I'd like to every day because I enjoy it so much, and want to keep playing more. She is sensitive to his interests and has a very good sense of where he is at.
